CEO Rey Saldaña recalls receiving an unexpected phone call while he was in a hotel room. The person on the other end, a complete stranger, delivered surprising news. A generous and anonymous donor expressed their admiration for Saldaña’s organization, Communities in Schools, and expressed a desire to make a substantial donation without any restrictions, to support their work.

Saldaña, who had recently taken on the role of CEO for the nonprofit focused on preventing student dropouts, envisioned a $10 million donation that would facilitate the organization’s efforts in bringing more mentors and support staff to schools across the country.

However, his estimate was far from reality.

In an extraordinary act of generosity, MacKenzie Scott, in one of her largest personal donations ever made, decided to award Communities in Schools with a staggering $133 million. Saldaña highlighted the transformative impact this donation would have on the organization.

In their announcement about the donation, Communities in Schools stated that the funds will be utilized to enhance the presence of their staff within schools. They aim to build one-on-one relationships with students, assisting them in overcoming challenges both in the classroom and beyond. Additionally, the funds will enable CIS to collaborate with schools and local service providers to meet the diverse needs of students and families. This includes providing essential resources such as food, housing, healthcare, counseling, and access to remote technology, allowing students and educators to focus on academic pursuits.
